There are few phones that provide such a great camera experience for an affordable price. While you can buy a pretty good smartphone on a budget these days, you’re never going to get the latest gizmos for under $1,000. But then, do you really need all those fancy things?
For most people, the camera is actually the most important part of the smartphone. While others want to have a top-of-the-line chipset to ensure that they can game without any lag, most people love to snap photos, and thus the camera is pretty much the most important feature of the modern smartphone.
While the Samsung Galaxy Note 10 and the iPhone XS Max are rocking some serious camera hardware, you probably don’t want to spend all your savings on getting one. So what should you opt for instead? My friends, you should opt for the Motorola One Zoom.
Perfect camera on a budget
The Motorola One Zoom features a behemoth camera setup. The back of the device holds four lenses, including a 48MP main sensor, an ultra-wide angle lens, a 5MP depth sensor, and a telephoto lens. All of this together means that you can take stunning photos without having to shell out on an expensive smartphone.
The camera setup on the Motorola One Zoom reflects a growing demand for cutting edge snappers on today’s smartphones. While the phone’s internal gadgets might not be overly powerful, Motorola have ensured that much of the device’s power is geared towards ensuring the camera app loads quickly and flicks between different shooting modes with ease.
On top of that, the range of different modes available – and the lenses backing them up – mean that you can take all sorts of landscape, portrait, and filtered shots. There is plenty to explore and the Motorola One Zoom does a great job of allowing you to take your mobile photography to the next level. Your Instagram followers will thank you for having invested in one.
What’s more, the front of the phone features no less than a 25MP selfie camera – that’s one hell of a vanity-snapper. You’ll be looking crisp and high-res in all your duck-face selfies from now on. Seriously, if you’re into taking photos of yourself and your surroundings and you don’t want to spend a lot of money, then this could just be the ultimate phone for you.
The internal side of things
While the phone has a great camera, the Snapdragon 675 chipset and the 4GB of RAM won’t be enough to impress those who have been considering serious handsets – but if you’re just after something that covers the basics and takes a great snap, then this is certainly worth considering.
The Motorola One Zoom comes with enough internal storage and processing power to handle your everyday apps without any issues. While it won’t be enough to handle gaming operations, it’s certainly enough to get your basic stuff done. If you’re not addicted to Fortnite, then this shouldn’t actually be of concern to you.
Motorola One Zoom Design
The smartphone isn’t a premium one, but it sort of feels like it is nonetheless. The design of the phone certainly looks premium with its large display and glass back. The simple and tested design of the phone isn’t revolutionary, but then it’s a look that has stood the test of time and certainly isn’t unattractive.
The bezels are a bit bigger than you’d expect to find on a modern smartphone, and the notch at the top center of the screen sort of gets in the way of the display, but these are trivial concerns when you consider how little you’re paying for the device.
On the rear casing, the four cameras are arranged in a square with the Motorola logo underneath in a raised rectangle. It’s a pretty cool look and certainly one that will attract some attention if you leave it on a table with the cameras exposed.
If you’re looking for something that makes you look like you’ve got a premium bit of kit, then you could do worse than this.
Not bad for budget
For a budget smartphone with a solid camera setup, the Motorola One Zoom is probably the best you’re going to get anywhere on the market. If you’re looking for a phone that will champion gaming, then something like the Honor Play is probably more for you – and this one won’t break the bank too much, either.
If you’re a photo addict with a penchant for selfies and exploring your surroundings, however, then the Motorola One Zoom is going to be right up your street. It’s got enough going on inside it to get through pretty much any basic task that you throw at it, and it’s got a pretty sleek design that will satisfy most users.
Price and availability
The Motorola One Zoom costs US$449, or £379 (AU$660). It is available in the US, UK, Europe, Australia and New Zealand, and other regions around the world. If you purchase the phone in Europe then you can get it to be compatible with Amazon Alexa, which is a really cool bonus. It might be worth importing the phone from Europe if you live outside the region, for this reason.
In short, no matter where you are in the world, you can get your hands on this awesome device without having to spend much money. That’s a refreshing situation compared to most smartphones which can stand up to the epic camera display going on here.
It might not be the best phone on the market and it might not have the same sleek design as a Galaxy Note 10 or an iPhone XS Max, but this budget warrior holds its own ground all the same. For a phone that gets the job done and can capture memories in the highest resolution, we think that the asking price is a bargain.
